RINGS stands for “Road towards Innovative governance of NOC's and Grassroots Sport organisations”. Its aim is to improve the governance of National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and sports federations in Europe through strategic and change management.

NOCs and sports federations are increasingly confronted with higher expectations from their external stakeholders. The number of stakeholders has also grown significantly, and their specific interests vary depending on the topic at hand, making the governance and management of NOCs more challenging than ever before.

The RINGS project, supported by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, brought together the experiences of 11 European National Olympic Committees (Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Slovakia, and Turkey) along with the expertise of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.

The three tools designed to support sports federations and National Olympic Committees with strategic management are:

  • A Strategic Management Handbook, compiled by the team of Professor Holger Preuss from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
  • Public Affairs Guidelines, written by the Danish Olympic Committee (DIF).
  • An online stakeholder analysis tool, developed by the EOC EU Office in collaboration with Symantra.

These tools, as well as more information about the project, are available on the Sport Governance Platform of the EOC EU Office.
